Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P)

Radford University’s College of Nursing offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program for the B.S.N. or Master’s (M.S.N.) prepared registered nurse (RN) for advanced nursing practice or nursing leadership. Theory and research-based courses prepare graduates to work in a variety of settings, including community and population-based service, home care, clinics, hospice care, hospitals, long-term care, education, administration, and policy. The DNP program culminates in a residency tailor-made to the student’s learning needs and career goals. The program tracks are either online or hybrid to promote maximum flexibility while maintaining quality student connections.

DNP - Family Nurse Practitioner (post-BSN)


This DNP concentration educates nurses who will be qualified to provide primary health care in homes, clinics, ambulatory care facilities, long-term care facilities and other health care agencies. Upon completion of this concentration, graduates are prepared to sit for a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification exam.  Students may pursue this track either Post-BSN or Post-MSN.

Program Requirements 78 hrs.


DNP - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner


This DNP concentration prepares nurses for advanced practice in psychiatric mental health nursing. Nurses will be qualified to work in hospitals, clinics, and mental health facilities. Upon completing this concentration, graduates are prepared to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) board examination. Students may pursue this track either Post-BSN or Post-MSN.

Program Requirements 79 hrs.


The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration of the D. N. P. program prepares graduates with the knowledge and skills to synthesize and apply theories, clinical reasoning and research in the treatment of individuals, families and groups across the lifespan. Courses focus on advanced psychiatric mental health nursing practice for addressing behavioral health issues, as well as acute and chronic mental illness. Evidence-based methods include psychopharmacological, psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational interventions with emphasis on mental health promotion and disease prevention strategies. This specialty concentration meets the criteria established by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Upon successful completion of the approved courses, graduates are eligible to take the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification examination offered by AANP or ANCC.

DNP - Nurse Leadership


This DNP concentration is for students holding either an MS or MSN in systems, management, or administration. It is designed to educate nurses to meet the complex needs that exist in the healthcare environment and expand upon skills that are executive in nature yet focused in nursing.

DNP - Clinical Practice Leadership


This DNP concentration prepares nurses to assume roles as clinical leaders, nurse executives, healthcare consultants, and policy advocates. They possess the expertise to shape and influence healthcare policies, implement evidence-based practices, and lead interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient care quality and safety.
