Scope and Sequence

The certificate in Appalachian Studies consists of 18 graduate credit hours chosen from among those courses listed below. Other courses may be added to the list with the approval of the Appalachian Studies Committee. Courses do not have to be taken in a particular sequence since each is a complete entity within itself. Therefore, students may begin the curriculum in any semester. However, students are required to take APST 610 , APST 620 , and APST 698 to receive the certificate. Many classes are offered online asynchronously.

APST 560 - Seminar in Appalachian Studies
Students may enroll twice, as long as the content differs.
APST 590 - Highland Summer Conference Writer’s Workshop
APST 610 - Foundations of Appalachian Studies
APST 620 - New Perspectives in Appalachian Studies
APST 630 - Political Economy & Community Development in Appalachia
APST 640 - Community-Based Research & Grant Writing
APST 680 - Appalachian Studies Internship
Each hour of credit will require 40 hours on the job. The course is a one semester internship with a public or private agency in Appalachia. Student will receive academic and agency supervision. The course will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
APST 698 - Directed Study
ENGL 590 - Highland Summer Conference Writers’ Workshop
A two week summer institute – Appalachian writing and culture. Students may enroll twice (2 summers), as the course content changes.

RU graduate evening courses, taught fall and spring semesters.
ENGL 648 - Studies in Oral and Written Literature of Appalachia
Students may enroll twice, as long as the content differs.
